The pinnacle of the Errazuriz range is Viñedo Chadwick, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto in Maipo. The grapes are sourced from their 15-hectare property that sits at 650 metres altitude and were planted in 1992. Fermentation was in stainless steel tanks before maturation for 22 months in French oak barrels, 90% of which were new. The 2013 is a strong release that is perfect for drinking now but way well develop further complexity with additional bottle age.

The 2013 Viñedo Chadwick slowly reveals an increasingly multifaceted nose of black fruits, dried flowers, graphite, cedar, fresh herbs and a touch of cocoa powder. The palate is weightlessly rich, with an alluring, deliciously buoyant texture that seamlessly transitions to a saturated, elegantly structured finish that continuously unfolds with further aeration. This does an admirable job of balancing transparency, vibrancy and luxurious presentation. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 22 months in 90% new French oak barrels.

The 2013 Viñedo Chadwick came from a generally typical year in terms of climate, although March and April were cool, stretching out the Cabernet Sauvignon’s ripening period. The wine spent 22 months in 90% new French barrels. It’s garnet red in the glass. It has a nose of pyrazine, mint and red fruit over secondary aromas from the aging process which provide a well-judged frame. In the mouth, the tannins are firm with throat-tickling freshness and plenty of energy. The grippy flow is well-balanced and relaxed with a flavorful backdrop and ends with a lively, and lengthy, finish.

Wow! Hadn’t realised how expensive this wine was… Deepest crimson shaded out to the rim already. Really interesting, complex, sophisticated nose. Very opulent but also very appetising. Well done! Doesn’t seem at all forced. Very ambitious pricing, but it certainly is a good wine. Tannins well handled so that you could just about contemplate drinking this wine already. (JR)
