Ermitage Rouge Le Méal Chapoutier 2005 is a Syrah from the Hermitage appellation in the Northern Rhône, sourced from the Le Méal lieu-dit. M Chapoutier owns 2.2 hectares of this celebrated site. The 2005 vintage was a classic, warm year that produced concentrated and powerful wines in the Northern Rhône. This bottling, presented here in jeroboam format, is beginning to show its maturity with a complex bouquet of ripe blackberry, liquorice and smoked meat, all underscored by an intense mineral core. The palate is full-bodied with a rich, chewy texture and firm but ripe tannins, showcasing a youthful structure that promises further development.

Bright red. Intensely floral, room-filling bouquet of strawberry, raspberry and smoky minerals. Deep and sweet but incredibly focused and pure, with luscious red berry preserve flavors, silky tannins and terrific mineral lift. Seems to gain depth on the finish, with the sweet red fruit qualities echoing. This is all about the fruit today.Josh Raynolds1st January 2008

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
