Ermitage Les Greffieux Chapoutier 2012 is a single-site Syrah, sourced from the Greffieux vineyards at the base of the Hermitage hill. The soils consist of glacial alluvial deposits, featuring a mix of shingles and clay. Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo destemming and are vinified in cement vats. A lengthy maceration promotes gentle tannin extraction, followed by aging for 14 to 18 months in a combination of new and previously used oak barrels. Michel Chapoutier, known for his biodynamic practices, leads this winery. Expect powerful tannins and liquorice-spiced fruits. Suitable for ageing up to 60 years.
94 Vinous
Inky purple. Intense smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berries, cherry liqueur and fresh flowers. Spicy and taut on entry, then fleshier and sweeter in the mid-palate, offering spicy black raspberry and violet pastille flavors and a jolt of tangy acidity on the back half. Puts on weight with air while maintaining striking energy and sharp focus. Finishes bright, silky and extremely long, with excellent clarity, harmonious tannins and lingering spiciness. Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
