Chapoutier Ermitage Les Greffieux 2010 is a full-bodied Syrah red wine from the Hermitage appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley. Maison Chapoutier is one of the oldest and most prestigious names in the Rhône region, producing a wide range of cuvées. Chapoutier is both a négociant and a winemaker, actively engaged throughout the Rhône Valley, with holdings in nearly 25% of the entire appellation. This particular release is from a single parcel within the iconic cru of Hermitage, which is located at the bottom of the hill on alluvial soils. "More concentrated and powerful, the 2010 Ermitage Les Greffieux is thrilling on all accounts. More of a long-term prospect than the ’11, it offers massive creme de cassis, scorched earth, graphite and crushed-rock like minerality to go with a full-bodied, rich, textured and structured profile on the palate. The purity here is off-the-charts and this incredible Syrah should be given 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoyed over the following two decades." Wine Advocate, 2014

Vivid purple. Mineral- and smoke-accented blackberry and blueberry on the intensely perfumed nose and in the mouth. Lush but energetic, with a peppery nuance adding bite and a sexy floral note building in the glass. Gains weight and structure with air and finishes with outstanding power and focus, on a lingering candied violet note. The most mineral-driven of this year's set of Ermitage bottlings from Chapoutier, and in need of patience.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
