Ermitage Le Pavillon Chapoutier 1996 is a single-vineyard wine sourced exclusively from the prestigious Les Bessards lieu-dit on Hermitage hill. This Syrah exhibits complex aromas of dark fruit, iron and black pepper, underpinned by a distinct minerality that reflects its granite terroir. The palate reveals a weighty structure with firm tannins and a long, evolving finish. Michel Chapoutier, the estate`s visionary winemaker, is known for his biodynamic practices and commitment to expressing terroir.

Saturated ruby. Deep aromas of cassis, blueberry, game, woodsmoke and iron. Thick, powerful and gamey in the mouth; has the texture and thickness not yet shown by Chapoutier's '96 Hermitage Méal. Primal dark berry and violet notes. Explosive fruit on the very long aftertaste, which features huge, chewy tannins. Neither particularly sauvage nor especially austere. Should be a beauty with seven or eight years of bottle aging. A great performance for the vintage.Stephen Tanzer1st January 1999

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
