The 2014 Ermitage L`Ermite from Chapoutier presents a complex profile characterised by a firm structure and notable minerality. This wine exhibits aromas of crushed violets, dark fruit compote and subtle hints of smoke. Its substantial tannins suggest a period of maturation is beneficial, with a persistent finish that highlights its depth. Founded in 1808, Chapoutier is renowned for its biodynamic viticulture and its commitment to terroir. Ideal for cellaring, this bottle may be forgotten for five to seven years and will continue to evolve beautifully over two decades.

The inky black/purple-colored 2014 Ermitage l’Ermite is more firm, backward and mineral driven than the sexier Pavillon, offering fabulous notes of scorched earth, wood smoke, crushed violets, and both blackcurrant and crème de cassis. An utterly profound effort, it defines the more charming nature of the vintage, displaying building tannin and one seriously long finish. Forget bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two decades. - Jeb Dunnuck

Lurid violet. Sexy dark berry preserve, floral pastille and spicecake scents are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, licorice and cracked pepper. Round and expansive on the palate, offering appealingly sweet boysenberry and cherry preserve flavors and a touch of star anise. Closes supple, smoky and extremely long, displaying lingering spiciness and smooth tannins.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
