Ermitage L`Ermite Chapoutier 2013 is a 100% Syrah sourced from the distinguished Hermitage Hill, where vines averaging 80 years of age thrive in poor granitic soils. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested to enhance alcohol content and are completely destemmed. Fermentation occurs in concrete tanks over approximately four weeks, maintaining temperatures below 32C to ensure optimal extraction. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes maturation in new and previously used casks for 18 to 20 months.

- The elegant 2013 Ermitage L'Ermite opens with jammy red and black fruits, tobacco, crushed violets, cured meat and earthy undertones. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2013 engages the palate with solid concentration and spot-on balance. Grippy tannins give firm structure to what is essentially a classic L'Ermite that transparently shows the characteristics of a cooler vintage.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
