Chapoutier is one of the biggest companies in the Rhône Valley acting both as a producer and a négociant, with activity across all of the major appellations. This is 100% Marsanne from 50+-year-old vines from a single plot on the Méal hillside, fermented 50% in 600-litre wooden barrels and aged on lees for around 10 months. The 2016 is a deliciously full-bodied and voluptuous wine but exhibits admirable restraint and superb balance. It is ripe and exotic, reflective of its sunny hillside exposition, with intriguing mineral accents. There is youthful appeal here, but this will improve with age.

The 2016 Ermitage Blanc Le Méal is much more developed than the 2015 Ermitage Blanc De L'Orée tasted alongside. Deep straw-yellow in color, the 2016 exhales pronounced quince, hay, acacia honey, dried apple and toasted bread aromas. Powerful and deep, it hits the palate with full force. Opulent and flashy, the 2016 Blanc Le Méal closes with distinctive phenolic grip. Although it’s not the most elegant rendition, it does show the great potential that aged Marsanne can bring when made in the right hands.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
