The M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc Le Méal is an intensely concentrated expression of Hermitage, sourced exclusively from the Le Méal lieu-dit whose granite-based soils are rich in rolled pebbles and iron oxide. The 2017 vintage, composed of 100% Marsanne, is defined by its richness, low yields, and near-complete absence of malolactic fermentation, retaining a high, driving acidity despite its power. Fermented and aged entirely in new French oak barrels, it presents an opulent palate of honey, dried apricot, quince paste, and beeswax, leading to an almost chewy, dense texture and a long, profoundly mineral finish.
94 Vinous
Pale greenish gold. Orange, pear, hazelnut, sweet butter, truffle and minerals on the nose, with a slow-building floral quality; like a serious Chassagne-Montrachet. Palate-staining sweet citrus and orchard fruit flavors are underscored by smoky minerals and talc. The minerality seems to gain power on the finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and persistent. More energetic than the l'Oree, and in need of more patience.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
