The winery founded in 1808 by the Calvet family was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855 and it has since become one of the biggest companies in the Rhône Valley both as a producer and a négociant, with activity across all of the major appellations. Cuvée de l’Orée is 100% old-vine Marsanne from a single organically and biodynamically cultivated plot of Hermitage called Les Murets. All fruit is hand-harvested, 50% vinified in 600-litre wooden barrels and matured on lees for 6 months, with additional ageing before bottling. Intense golden yellow in colour, it offers delicious aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, honey, hawthorn and acacia blossom. Full-bodied and rich, yet beautifully vibrant and fresh, this is a superb expressed of this underrated variety.

Brilliant gold. Heady lemon curd, pear nectar, iodine and toasted brioche on the deeply perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed citrus and orchard fruit and sweet butter flavors that show outstanding clarity and minerally thrust. Delivers superb energy and real power on the clinging finish, which features a sexy floral quality and a touch of smoky minerality. This wine's balancing act of power and finesse is extremely impressive.Josh Raynolds1st May 2018

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
