Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc Cuvée de L`Orée 1997 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Marsanne white wine from the Hermitage appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley. The Chapoutier winery founded in 1808 by the Calvet family was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855. It has since become one of the biggest companies in the Rhône Valley both as a producer and a négociant, with activity across all of the major appellations. Cuvée de l’Orée is 100% old-vine Marsanne from a single organically and biodynamically cultivated plot of Hermitage called Les Murets. All fruit is hand-harvested, 50% vinified in 600-litre wooden barrels and matured on lees for 6 months, with additional ageing before bottling. "It is no secret that I adore Chapoutier`s luxury cuvee of white Hermitage called Cuvee L`Oree. Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare, this wine flirts with perfection. It is a compelling white Hermitage. Made from 100% Marsanne, it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest, most massive Montrachet money can buy. It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily and beautifully balanced. I suspect it will drink well early in life, and then shut down for a few years. It should last for 4-5 decades. It is a huge, chewy, multidimensional wine with spectacular concentration and richness. Notes of white flowers, honey, minerals, and peaches are present in astronomical quantities. In short, this wine must be tasted to be believed." Robert Parker, 1999

More polite but superripe aromas of apple and honey. Very rich on the palate, with flavors of apple, honey and hazelnut complicated by suggestions of roasted herbs, grass and white flowers. Fat, dense and satisfying. This is over 14% alcohol with no chaptalization.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2000

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
