After spending some time working as a cellarmaster for Krug, Eric Rodez returned to his family winery in the early 1990s and decided to set up his own champagne label. He currently cultivates approximately 6 hectares of vines in Ambonnay which are now certified organic. This is a multi-vintage Blanc de Blancs, from which 70% of the wines are vinified in small oak barrels. Expect notes of taut citrus fruit, green apple and green tea.
91 Vinous
(made from fruit grown in Ambonnay; L0913): Light yellow. Poached pear, chamomile, sweet butter and toasty lees on the deeply scented nose. Picks up a spicy nuance with air, which adds lift to the ripe orchard fruit and candied fig flavors. In a powerful style but not lacking for vivacity. Finishes toasty and long, with a hint of grilled nuts and very good length. I also tasted the same wine from Lot L0912 and found it somewhat weightier and spicier.Josh Raynolds1st December 2013

Bold, Expressive Champagnes

Based in the renowned Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims, Eric Rodez is a leading producer of fine Champagnes. With a Champagne-making history stretching back many generations, the domaine is now run by Eric, his wife Martine and his son, Mickaël (the ninth generation of the winemaking family).

Eric Rodez owns 9ha of Pinot Noir vines and 7ha of Chardonnay along the south and southeast-facing slopes of Ambonnay. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically while, in the cellar, about 70% of Rodez Champagne is fermented and aged in oak.

The character of Rodez Champagnes is heavily defined by the judicious blending of reserve wines with the new-vintage wine, with Eric using up to 10 different vintages in his final cuvées – his experience in the cellar at Champagne Krug surely a factor there. Whatever the particular cuvée, Rodez Champagnes are consistently elegant, vinous yet deliciously complex.
