Elephant Hill Syrah 2018 is a premium red from the Te Awanga sub-region of Hawke’s Bay, where the proximity to the Pacific Ocean ensures a long and cool growing season. This 2018 vintage is an elegant, Northern Rhône-style Syrah, featuring a fragrant bouquet of black pepper, violets and dark plum fruit. The grapes are grown on a mix of shingle and clay soils, which contribute both structural power and a fine mineral tension. Winemaking includes a portion of whole-cluster fermentation and maturation in French oak, resulting in a wine with silken tannins and a savoury, spicy finish. It is a refined and poised expression of New Zealand Syrah, balancing fruit intensity with an Atlantic freshness.

A sleek and spicy Syrah with Chinese five-spice as well as white and black pepper filling the mouth with fragrance. There's plenty of black cherry and strawberry fruit concentration here, and cedar-like oak flavors too. It has a midweight frame with fine-grained, chalky tannins coating the mouth and a sinew of tannin and acidity providing a taut finish. While it is impressive, there's a sense that it's trying to be too perfect. Rebecca Gibb1st March 2021

Bacon, meat, smoke, deep plum and black cherry with a long peppery note that really sums up the variety and origin. Clean and crisp with an attractive burnt edge to the finish, contrasting with the juicy primary fruit. (RH)
