El Ixsir Red 2016 presents a deep ruby colour, showcasing the complexity inherent in its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and other local varieties. The nose reveals an array of black cherry, plum and subtle herbal notes, underpinned by hints of earthiness and spice. On the palate, it exhibits structured tannins with a lively acidity. The vineyards, located in the Batroun region, benefit from a unique microclimate. El Ixsir is known for its commitment to organic farming practices, aiming to showcase the region`s diverse profiles through sustainable methods.

The 2016 EL red is a 55/35 blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Merlot aged for 24 months in an equal mixture of new and used French oak. It comes in at 14.6% alcohol. When last seen, this was tight, but a couple of years more in the bottle has really helped it come around. Sumptuous and full-bodied, it is now much more approachable with the tannins having moderated and the fruit having taken over. Overall, there is still firmness on the finish, and this is beautifully structured. The Syrah gives this a fair share of character, but if there`s a remaining quibble, it is that the oak is still too prominent. I`m encouraged by the wine`s development and improvement on all fronts, though. It is impressive. It should last another decade or so, maybe more. It is still on the upswing and still improving. The price is merely the original price I was given on release. - Mark Squires
