Scharzhofberg is among the finest vineyards in Germany and is the source of some of the world’s greatest Rieslings. Gold Cap Auslese wines are not released every year and denote a supremely limited production from the best grapes with more highly concentrated juice, higher levels of botrytis and greater aging potential. The 2018 an extraordinarily complex sweet wine with incredible levels of freshness and finesse. Drink 2030-2080.

The 2018 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #9) –Gold Capsule– is very clear but concentrated and aromatic on the still SO2-covered nose that needs a lot of aeration to breathe and develop its true character. Round, very delicate and fresh on the palate, this is a noble sweet, salty-piquant and enormously stimulating Auslese with a long, complex, well-structured and mineral finish with fine raisin aromas, and it keeps the finesse and freshness of the Scharzhofberg terroir from the beginning to the very end. Tasted in June 2019.

This auctioned bottling represents just half a fuder. (A second gold capsule Auslese, the A.P. #9, representing a full fuder, was sold through normal trade channels.) The nose is greeted by raw mushroom, peach preserves and candied lemon peel. The glossy palate presents a syrupy, slightly sticky impression without the leavening of fresh fruit acids or salinity that feature in other Müller wines of the vintage. For sheer concentrated persistence, though, this is a formidable specimen, and it does memorably deliver that other hallmark of Müller 2018s: a tingling sense of finishing vibrancy. Lucky bidders should lock their bottles away for a while (and perhaps also cross their fingers).David Schildknecht1st July 2020

King of the Mosel Valley

Broadly considered to make some of the greatest Rieslings in the world, the Egon Müller winery has been in the same family since 1797. Farming on the steep slopes of the Mosel valley, the estate owns around one third of the famous Scharzofberg vineyard, one of the region's greatest. That parcel includes three hectares of ungrafted vines - a rarity in any European grape growing region.

Extreme care is taken in the vineyard and all grapes are hand harvested. Fruit is pressed without any skin contact to preserve freshness and fermentation takes place in large, one thousand litre casks in cool cellars beneath the valley where they rest for around six months before bottling. The dry wines are clean and fresh with an unmistakable elegance while the sweeter wines (Spatlese, Auslese and TBA) offer a richness and depth of flavour that make them some of the greatest in Germany.
