Weingut Egon Müller is widely considered one of the world’s finest white wine producers and the highly revered Scharzhofberg vineyard is the source of some of the greatest Riesling in the country. The 2018 Auslese is a stunning wine of remarkable intensity, concentration and purity of flavour. It is generous, beautifully elegant, impeccably balanced and has extraordinary aging potential.

White peach and white currant in jellied form are wreathed in thyme and mint and accompanied by a whiff of raw mushroom on an enticing nose and a glossy, faintly oily palate. Prominent sweetness is checked by an influx of fresh citrus, along with mouthwatering salinity. The vibrantly persistent finish introduces nippy aspects of green herbs as well as of botrytis spice. Like its counterpart from the Braune Kupp, this will need time to reveal its full stature. David Schildknecht1st July 2020

Egon Muller

King of the Mosel Valley

Broadly considered to make some of the greatest Rieslings in the world, the Egon Müller winery has been in the same family since 1797. Farming on the steep slopes of the Mosel valley, the estate owns around one third of the famous Scharzofberg vineyard, one of the region's greatest. That parcel includes three hectares of ungrafted vines - a rarity in any European grape growing region.

Extreme care is taken in the vineyard and all grapes are hand harvested. Fruit is pressed without any skin contact to preserve freshness and fermentation takes place in large, one thousand litre casks in cool cellars beneath the valley where they rest for around six months before bottling. The dry wines are clean and fresh with an unmistakable elegance while the sweeter wines (Spatlese, Auslese and TBA) offer a richness and depth of flavour that make them some of the greatest in Germany.
