Henri Jayer, born in Vosne-Romanée in 1922, was a legendary Burgundy winemaker renowned for his exceptional Pinot Noir wines. He began producing wines under his own label in the 1950s and was later dubbed the "Master of Pinot Noir" by Robert Parker.

The 1996 Échezeaux, produced by Georges and Henri Jayer, is a testament to his winemaking prowess. Sourced from the Échezeaux Grand Cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, this wine is crafted from Pinot Noir grapes grown on low-lying sandy soils, which contribute to its refined and elegant character. Henri Jayer was known for his meticulous vineyard management, including low yields and minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to express itself fully. In the cellar, he employed traditional methods such as destemming, cold maceration, and ageing in new oak barrels to enhance the wine`s complexity and structure.

The 1996 Échezeaux reveal a wine that is ripe, generous, and intense without any heaviness. Flavours range from dark cherries to savoury herbs, green tea leaves, and nutmeg. The finish is long and robust, indicating its potential for further ageing.
