Some influential producers in the world of fine wine need no introduction – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is certainly one of them. With a rich heritage that goes back to the 16th century, DRC is co-owned by the Villaine and Leroy families and produces only Grand Cru wines. This 1996 Échezeaux comes from their 4.67-hectare plot which is now fully biodynamic. The 1996 vintage is a very elegant wine, which opens up to spicy, floral aromatics. The palate combines concentration and purity of the ripe, tart cherry fruit which marries nicely with a strong acidity and secondary flavours from its maturity.

Good red-ruby. Currant, red plum, wild strawberry, tobacco and tar on the nose, plus a faint gamey quality. Juicy and penetrating, but quite closed today. Very persistent on the finish, but the tannins are a bit tough. Conveys an impression of rather vigorous extraction.Stephen Tanzer1st March 1999
