Échezeaux 2012 from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a Grand Cru red from Flagey-Échezeaux. Sourced from the estate’s parcels in the Clos Saint-Denis sub-climat, the wine is produced with 100% new oak and a focus on aromatic purity. The 2012 vintage provided wines with great fruit intensity and a refined structural profile. It exhibits notes of red cherries, rose petals, sandalwood and exotic spices, with a palate that is notably lithe and silky. The use of high-quality oak is perfectly integrated, adding a lacy texture and a persistent finish. This bottling prioritises elegance and transparency, showcasing the more ethereal and perfumed side of the Échezeaux vineyard.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has a slightly disjointed nose at first, but it melds together nicely in the glass, revealing pure blackberry and raspberry fruit, heather and fresh mint notes with aeration. There is focus and intensity here that builds before you. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, very well-judged acidity, cohesive and voluminous with a very precise finish that indicates some very clever, judicious winemaking. This is an Echézeaux from the top drawer, confirming previous bottles that have excelled.

The 2012 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a vibrant bouquet that is cut from a similar cloth to the 2016, but there is more precision and control. Lavender and tomato vine, just as I found a couple of years ago, continue to infuse the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry and fine depth, not quite as detailed as before but it feels persistent on the finish. Very fine. Neal Martin20th August 2025

Double decanted. A bit darker than the much younger vintages. Round and smooth. Lip-smacking and satisfying but not perhaps as subtle as some of the 2023s. Solid pleasure. But good freshness. Lots still to come! (JR)Jancis Robinson29th April 2025
