Since the early 2000s, Eben Sadie has produced cutting-edge and characterful wines that have revolutionised the South African landscape and inspired a whole generation of winemakers. His wines are highly sought after, produced in very limited quantities due to Sadie’s meticulous practices, the wines quickly became a must-have for drinkers and collectors alike.
2015 Columella is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan & Cinsaut, which spends 12 months on lees in French oak (8% new), before racking and an additional year of ageing on its fine lees in large oak foudres before bottling.
With an alcohol content of 14.1% abv, the wine presents an intense expression of dark fruit, balanced with refreshing acidity. It`s crafted to reflect the distinct characteristics of its Swartland origins, showcasing the region`s diverse terroirs.

Vinous
The 2015 Columella is darker in color than its peers. The nose is cut in a more modern, oakier style, with black cherries and veins of blue fruit. The palate is ripe and dense, clearly showing more extraction than its peers, though it does not have the same bandwidth and mineralité, rendered just a bit monolithic on the finish. Eben Sadie was making this in a heavier style at this point in time and recent vintages have demonstrated far more precision and character. Tasted blind at the 10-Year-On horizontal in London.
