Eben Sadie Columella 2012 is a blend featuring 76% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, and 7% Grenache, sourced from the Swartland and Paardeberg regions. The wine undergoes fermentation in 2,000-litre open wooden fermenters, followed by a 12-month maturation in barriques (10% new) before spending a further year in oval foudres. The 2012 vintage presents a defined nose with wild strawberry, bilberry, cloves, and white pepper. The palate exhibits medium body, firm tannins, and crisp acidity, culminating in a structured finish. Eben Sadie is known for his unique approach, relying on leased vineyards rather than ownership.

Good bright ruby. Deep, musky, nuanced nose combines raspberry, flinty minerality, rose petal, anise and crushed herbs; reminded me of a northern Rhone wine. Then broad, round, dry and complex on the palate, with the musky red fruit and floral flavors accented by pepper and flint notes. Still an infant today, this classically dry, very long wine finishes with extremely suave, even tannins, outstanding breadth and a wonderful light touch. Splendid potential here.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2015
