Eben Sadie Columella 2011 is a flagship red blend from the Swartland region of South Africa. Columella is sourced from traditional bush vines dry-farmed on schist soils, a reflection of Eben Sadie`s pioneering minimalist winemaking. This complex savoury profile offers concentrated aromas of black olive, thyme, dark fruit and pronounced schist minerality. The palate is dense and textural, showcasing immense structural foundation and a long, earthy finish.

Bright medium ruby. Knockout perfume of raspberry, cherry, smoke and menthol; this one also reminded me of a Rayas. Lush, suave and dry, showing a compelling savory quality to its raspberry and flinty mineral flavors. Finishes classically dry and backward, even a bit ungiving today, but with palate-staining length. This has all the elements to make a great bottle, but it calls for at least six or seven years of additional cellaring.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2015
