Owned by the Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens is a Second Growth estate in the Margaux appellation. The 55-hectare vineyard is both organic and biodynamic certified and planted on deep gravel soils over a sand and clay base. The 2019 vintage is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, and one third of the wine was aged in terracotta amphora. The result is a full-bodied, concentrated expression, combining notes of raspberries, tobacco, liquorice, cacao nibs and rose petals.

Vinous
The 2019 Durfort-Vivens was matured in two-thirds new oak barrels and one-third in amphorae. Plush on the nose with blueberry and violet scents, this is Margaux in style though much tighter than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine delineation and poise. It's pretty delineated towards the finish that shows more mineralité than previous vintages. There is an appealing linearity here, a trait that Gonzague Lurton seeks in his wines. Excellent. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st August 2023

2ème Grand Cru Classé
Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils.
Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. The resultant wines are beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines that are built for aging. There is an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, whilst 45% oak is used for the first wine and 20% for the second ‘Vivens’. A beautiful expression of the Margaux appellation.
