Durfort Vivens 2016 is a 2ème Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux from the Margaux appellation, crafted by the Lurton family, renowned for their commitment to excellence since 1961. Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. This red blend features Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, cultivated on gravel soils that contribute to its character. Notable for its mature structure, the wine exhibits balanced fruit, fine tannins, and complexities of leather and cigar smoke. It offers a study in elegance, making it a fitting choice for connoisseurs of Left Bank Bordeaux.

The 2016 Durfort Vivens, which I tasted at a négoçiant tasting, is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot, the vineyard now biodynamically farmed and Demeter approved. I have criticized this Margaux on previous occasions due to lack of ripeness, but certainly the nose does not display any of that. This 2016 comes armed with attractive blackberry, bilberry and sous-bois aromas that gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with an insistent grip on the entry. The tannins feel quite bold for Durfort-Vivens, with plenty of sappy black fruit. I appreciate the acidic drive of this Margaux and the finish is energetic, full of tension and leaves a lovely, almost brine-like aftertaste. This is one of the best wines from Gonzalgue Lurton that I have tasted in recent years. - Neal Martin

The 2016 Dufort-Vivens has a curious nose. I find this harder to work out than the 2015, and it is only after ten minutes in the glass that it settles down to reveal black cherries, raspberry coulis, iodine and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy opening, quite dense and more powerful than the 2015, although I do not find it has the same finesse on the finish. I was reserved in my judgment in barrel and remain that way regarding this vintage. Tasted at the château.

Dark purple. Very wild cocktail of aromas. Real lift and freshness. Racy and very distinctive. There is certainly full ripeness but a more delicate touch than most. Good length. Transparency and undertow. A way ahead? (JR)

2ème Grand Cru Classé

Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils.

Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. The resultant wines are beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines that are built for aging. There is an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, whilst 45% oak is used for the first wine and 20% for the second ‘Vivens’. A beautiful expression of the Margaux appellation.
