Château Durfort-Vivens is a biodynamic wine producer owned by Gonzague Lurton since the 1990s. The estate’s Grand Vin is made from the best plots of vineyards in four villages within the Margaux appellation – Cantenac, Soussans, Margaux and Arsac – all of which are vinified separately. The 2010 vintage is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in barrel [50% new oak]. Expect plenty of ripe dark fruit, balanced by some lovely hints of mint and anise. Ready to be enjoyed now.

The 2010 Durfort-Vivens has impressive intensity on the nose with scents of blackberry, cedar, allspice and graphite, so that it develops and almost Pauillac-like personality with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and acidity. This completely shades preceding vintages of the decade, not a powerful Margaux and yet very well balanced with admirable purity on the finish. This is drinking supremely well at this moment but should give another 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Durfort-Vivens dinner at Portland restaurant.Neal Martin1st August 2023

2ème Grand Cru Classé

Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils.

Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. The resultant wines are beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines that are built for aging. There is an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, whilst 45% oak is used for the first wine and 20% for the second ‘Vivens’. A beautiful expression of the Margaux appellation.
