This is a classically wrought Margaux from 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate, Château Durfort Vivens. From the superb 2005 vintage, it is composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 45% new oak for 22 months. Black-fruited, mineral and supremely elegant, this is an excellent example of Left Bank Bordeaux ideal for drinking right away.

The 2005 Durfort-Vivens is definitely one of the superior contributions this decade. It has a dense and intense bouquet with blackberry, mint and loamy scents. Perhaps just a bit charmless? The palate is tannic with dark fruit, a little austere but with an insistent grip and backbone. It is what you might call a "solid" Margaux, punchy yet certainly not nearly as refined as more recent vintages. Tasted at the Durfort-Vivens dinner at Portland restaurant.Neal Martin1st August 2023

Very dark maroon. Sweet, almost porty notes on the nose. Very sweet on the front palate, without quite enough acidity. Some strong Merlot influence. Good attempt but not very complex. Fades very fast on the finish. Lack of intensity on the mid palate. Not very appetising. Hot finish. Quite brutal. Unappetising – a bit sickly. (JR)

2ème Grand Cru Classé
Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils.
Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. The resultant wines are beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines that are built for aging. There is an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, whilst 45% oak is used for the first wine and 20% for the second ‘Vivens’. A beautiful expression of the Margaux appellation.
