Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils. Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961. A mature and graceful Margaux with good levels of fruit and fine tannins. Beautifully balanced, with leather and cigar smoke complexity.

The 1996 Durfort-Vivens is well worth seeking out. Plenty of dark berry fruit mixes with singed leather and pine on the nose, a touch of mint surfacing with time. This is nicely delineated, with a hint of capsicum emerging later. The palate is medium-bodied, nicely balanced with finer tannins than many vintages in the following decade. Yes, it has dried a little with age but has rustic charm and cohesion. Drinking perfectly now, I probably would not leave this too much longer. Tasted at the Durfort-Vivens dinner at Portland restaurant.Neal Martin1st August 2023

Somewhat under the radar, this superb 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces wonderful Left Bank Bordeaux reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel soils.

Owned by the high-profile Lurton family since 1961, Château Durfort-Vivens has been certified biodynamic since 2016. The resultant wines are beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines that are built for aging. There is an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, whilst 45% oak is used for the first wine and 20% for the second ‘Vivens’. A beautiful expression of the Margaux appellation.
