Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2012 is a Second Growth Bordeaux crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It captures the essence of St-Julien, shaped by the estate’s 50 hectares of deep gravel soils. Known for its precision and depth, the wine is built for ageing, typically requiring at least 5 to 10 years to reveal its full expression. With a lineage tracing back to the 14th century, Ducru-Beaucaillou’s legacy is one of consistency and refinement, producing wines that balance power with finesse.

Deep ruby in colour, with a seductive smoky, campfire crackle on the aromatics and plentiful black fruits that are softening to autumnal berries but still so full of expressive liqourice, sage, crayon, eucalyptus and creamy tarte tartin. Balanced, delicious, with supple tannic architecture that is ready to release the fruits. No rush to drink but moving into its drinking window. 100% new oak. Harvest October 3 to 10. The 2012 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a well-defined and quite concentrated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry and cedar aromas that open nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine balance and grip. This is a well-proportioned Saint-Julien with just the right amount of bitterness that lends an edginess to the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Neal Martin27th September 2022
