Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced in years of exceptional quality and only use selected fruit from the company’s finest vineyards. Expect classic notes of sweet spice, raisins and dried figs accompanied by a sweetly spiced palate with beautiful red-berried and date notes. A historic release from 1985.

The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on the entry, touches of liquorice and black pepper, curry powder and ginger with a very harmonious and long finish. This may well be the pick of the 1985 declarations and appears to have edged past the Taylor Fladgate 1985 in recent years. Tasted at the Big Fortified Tasting in London. Neal Martin1st June 2018

This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1985 is dark-ruby/purple with a rather closed one-dimensional aroma. On the palate, this Dow is restrained, but rich, tannic, and full-bodied, yet not nearly as concentrated as one would expect. Have I missed something?Robert Parker1st January 1989

200 Years of History

One of the most famous Port houses, Dow's has been producing fine wines in the Douro for over two hundred years. The estate's most celebrated vineyards are the Quinta do Bomfim and it's from here that much of the fruit for Dow's vintage Port is sourced. In select vintages, Quinto do Bomfim also produces a Single Quinta wine, which is highly prized by Port lovers.

The house has been owned and operated by the Symington family since the early 1960s. The Symingtons arranged for the repurchase of the famous Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, which was sold off in the 1950s, and brought Quinta do Santinho and Quinta da Cerdeira under the Dow's umbrella to ensure the house had access to suitably high quality fruit. Dow's represents excellent value for money in the world of vintage Port - a family run house with an eye on quality and tradition in equal measure.
