Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2011 is a sweet Riesling from the Nahe region of Germany. This wine is sourced from the estate`s smallest single vineyard, a four-hectare monopoly site bordering the Nahe river, where the microclimate facilitates consistent botrytis. The 2011 vintage produced Auslese wines of incredible purity and concentration, which are highlighted in this half-bottle format. The nose is an exuberant mix of honeyed apricot, passion fruit and slatey minerals. On the palate, the wine is lush and concentrated, yet it remains perfectly balanced by a piercing, citrus-driven acidity. This Goldkapsel bottling represents a selection of the most shrivelled berries, resulting in a dessert wine of remarkable persistence and a crystalline finish that evolves with every sip.

The Donnhoff 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule represents a selection of partly-botrytized bunches pulled out before what remained was packed under film to await the first hard frost. Mango and papaya, quince and peach deliver an impression both tropical and northerly, with musky animal and smoky black tea scents adding intrigue, while alkaline, saline, and otherwise maritime nuances lend saliva-inducing counterpoint to this elixir’s sheer richness of fruit as well as its palate’s opulence, oily texture, and honeyed glaze. There is a glowing, soothing yet stimulating harmony to the finish, even if not the animation or spellbinding interactivity of this year’s Donnhoff Spatlesen. I would plan to follow it over the next 20-25 years. Donnhoff doesn’t disagree with me that this is 2011 first and Brucke second. “You can’t heighten the typicity of the site by means of botrytis,” he adds. “That reached its apex already in the Spatlese.”
The Donnhoff crew participated in a massive “pre-harvest” in late September to cull those few but pervasive bunches that had picked up vinegar from marauding yellow jackets or contracted early and unpromising-looking botrytis. “Immediately after that,” relates Helmut Donnhoff, “we picked the Pinots, and then started in on Riesling, but there was no stress thanks to the stable weather. We picked each vineyard twice more, once chiefly for botrytis and once for the rest. I’ve never seen more beautiful grapes – everywhere you looked, regardless of vineyard. Any mistakes I made could only be in their cellar upbringing. It got so warm during the day that some pickers went shirtless. There was no difficulty with fruit harvested in the morning, but in the afternoon – since we don’t have a cooling chamber – we had to rush each lot of fruit straight to the cellar to be pressed, so that we could then cool-down the juice.” As a group, this year’s dry wines are a surprisingly austere group especially for their vintage.
