Dominus 1997 is a full-bodied Napa Bordeaux blend from the Dominus Estate in Yountville, California. Dominus was established by Christian Mouiex of Chateau Petrus in 1981, sourcing fruit from the dryfarmed Napanook vineyard – a site famous for producing some of the best Napa wines of the 1940s and 1950s. Dominus is also the name of the flagship wine of the estate, a seamlessly elegant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The exact blend in 1997 was 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4.5% Merlot. "Deep berry, cinnamon, briar and mint aromas. Firm, even backwards, it is trim and elegant, yet solid. Black fruit and bitter-chocolate flavours abound. The finish is especially tight, with dry tannins and complex mineral and earth elements. Huge but refined, the quintessential iron fist in a velvet glove; it needs time." Wine Enthusiast, 2000

Vinous
Saturated ruby-red. Multidimensional nose offers a panoply of scents: black plum, currant, leather, smoked meat, cigar ash, lead pencil, sandalwood, dark chocolate, licorice, brown sugar. Very bright and sharply defined; flavors of plum, leather, hot stones and lead pencil. An impeccably balanced wine of compelling sweetness, but rather dominated today by its structure. Strong, thoroughly ripe tannins spread out to coat the entire palate. Very long and subtle. This was bottled last June, a couple months later than the Napanook wine.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2000

A First Growth in Napa
Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.
The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
