Rooted in values of quality, stewardship, tradition and innovation, the Dominus Estate team produces distinctive wines that express the essence of the historic Napanook vineyard. Known for complexity and balance, this Cabernet blend is structured, seamless and perfectly integrated. The 1995 is exceptionally pure and concentrated and should be entering its peak drinking window.

Full deep red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of black and red raspberry, currant, plum, graphite and spicy oak. Supple entry, then bright and sharply delineated thanks to firm acids. Fruit-driven flavors of currant, cherry and leather. Expands nicely on the aftertaste. Tannins are suaver than those of the '96.Stephen Tanzer1st July 1999

This seemed much more obviously Cabernet and a bit drier and less hedonistic than the (riper) 1994 served (blind) alongside it. There was freshness on the finish after some obviously sweet fruit in the middle and some tannins still to be resolved. All in all this seems to be ageing at much the same rate as a good red bordeaux 1995. (JR)

A First Growth in Napa

Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.

The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
