Established in 1983 by Christian Moueix, Dominus Estate is nestled in Yountville, California, on the renowned Napanook vineyard, a source of premium Napa Valley wines in the 1940s and 1950s. Dominus relies on dry farming, allowing the vines to tap into the distinct geology of the land. In 2021, Dominus Estate proudly earned its CCOF – California Certified Organic Farmers – certification for adhering to organic farming practices. The 1990 Dominus showcases a profound ruby hue. Its bouquet intertwines roasted coffee beans and vanilla with luscious blackberry notes. These aromas persist on the palate, accompanied by sweet, rounded tannins that linger in the finish.
93 Vinous
Deep red-ruby. Knockout, Bordeaux-like aromas of cherry syrup, plum, chocolate, mocha and brown spices, plus a faint vegetal complexity. Sweet, smooth and ripe, if not quite as dense as the extraordinary '91. Excellent acidity gives the flavors lovely clarity. Finishes firmly tannic and very long. Extremely suave wine.Stephen Tanzer1st July 1999
17.5 Jancis Robinson
Served alongside Monte Bello 1990, this seemed a little simpler but if anything more youthful. Strong sweet cassis fruit and still a little tannin left in reserve. Very respectable indeed. Good to see Jean-Charles Cazes of Ch Lynch Bages impressed by it. (JR)

A First Growth in Napa

Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.

The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
