Once a religious property, Château du Domaine de L`Église is quite possibly the oldest wine producer in Pomerol. The vineyards sit on a gravelly clay soil and are planted predominantly to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. In 1972, the 7-hectare estate was acquired by Emile Castéja, who also owns Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille. The 2019 vintage – a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc – is the latest release from the château. It is a rich and concentrated wine, boasting notes of liquorice, truffles, plum liqueur and hints of violets. An excellent Pomerol that will age effortlessly.

The 2019 Domaine de l'Eglise still has a very opulent bouquet that feels pushed and molded by the growing season. As I previously noted, it needs more Pomerol typicité. The palate is sweet and slightly chewy, showing good depth. A real mouth-filling Pomerol with quite a toasty, cracked-black-pepper-tinged finish. Neal Martin1st February 2022
