Once a religious property, Château du Domaine de L`Église is quite possibly the oldest wine producer in Pomerol. The vineyards sit on a gravelly clay soil and are planted predominantly to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. In 1972, the estate was acquired by Emile Castéja, who also owns Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille. The 1989 vintage is drinking well now, showing notes of blackcurrants, chocolate and spices, complemented by soft tannins and lifting acidity.
