The Mitjavile family, proprietors of the acclaimed Saint-Émilion estate Le Tertre-Roteboeuf, also own Domaine de Cambes. While it is situated within Roc de Cambes, Domaine de Cambes is distinct and not regarded as the estate`s second wine; instead, it is treated as an individual expression. This particular offering originates from the 2002 vintage and has now undergone two decades of maturation in the bottle. The 2002 Bordeaux vintage yielded excellent wines, often found at attractive price points.

The 2010 Roc de Cambes has a high-toned floral bouquet with rose petal and violet scents, but missing some complexity and delineation. The aromatics feel “blocky”. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite extracted towards the finish with dates and figgy notes infusing the black fruit. Tasted blind. Deep garnet with brick rim. Still has masses of sweet black fruit on the nose as well as all that undergrowth. Ripe and sweet. A bit tough on the palate. A big tannic wine that finishes a little bit hard, perhaps the combination of alcohol and tannins? I generally rather like this wine so I was a bit disappointed when I realised what it was. I don’t think the Mitjavile wines shine (for me) in this sort of context (cf my note on Tertre Roteboeuf 2010, also tasted blind today). (JH)
