`Digby Fine English Blanc de Blancs Brut 2013 is a vintage, traditional-method blanc de bkancs sparkling wine produced in Arundel, West Sussex. This is Digby`s internationally renowned flagship sparkling wine – a wine considered to be one of the best expressions of English terroir. The first blanc de blancs that Digby has made, this elegant sparkling wine is made with the best Chardonnay grapes of the 2013 harvest. The wine was matured on lees for 10 years before disgorgement in 2023.

The 2013 Blanc de Blancs is fully evolved, aromatically open and layered—Digby`s patient release of Chardonnay from the initially terse 2013 vintage has been worth the wait. Time has turned the fruit to salty preserved lemon, roasted Bramley apple and sharp apricot tart flavors, touched around the edges with flavors of brown sugar and ground nuts and delivered with briny, bitter lemon length showing a complexing, yet not obtrusive level of savory evolution. It`s undeniably a taut, dramatic style that is driving and narrow in build yet keenly balanced and counterbalanced for rewarding drinking in what may be a fairly short window.

Their first Blanc de Blancs, all Chardonnay grown on greensand, released at 10 years old. My bottle was disgorged on 5 August 2023 according to a scribble on the back label. Their 2013 Vintage Reserve Brut was named Supreme Champion at the 2023 Wine GB awards.
Pale gold. Very marked autolysis on the nose. I`d say the nose is its most compelling attribute. It`s not that persistent, though of course has fine acidity on the palate which finishes dry. Appetising but not seductive. But perhaps it will blossom? (JR)
