Château Dauzac, located in the Margaux appellation, spans 42 hectares and utilises a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot for the 2005 vintage. For this wine the grapes were hand-harvested and underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with malolactic fermentation completed. This wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, consisting of up to 80% new wood. Château Dauzac has been producing wine since the 18th century, showcasing traditional Bordeaux winemaking methods.

Tasted at the vertical retrospective at the property. The 2005 Château Dauzac, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, appears to have reached full maturity on the nose, although there is abundant blackberry and mulberry fruit to suggest that it will keep for many years. The palate is medium-bodied, a little rustic on the entry with touches of bay leaf and tea leaf, though there I perceived some dryness creeping in towards the finish. Drink this now and over the next 5-8 years, because though it constitutes a commendable 2005, it is not quite living up to the promise it showed in its youth and in my opinion, is surpassed by subsequent vintages. Tasted June 2015. - Neal Martin

Good ruby-red. Nose offers hints of very ripe black fruits as well as a slightly weedy quality. Supple on entry, then a bit medicinal in the middle, with black fruit and herbal flavors and a faint gamey quality. Seems heavily extracted rather than truly fleshy. Finishes with broad, dusty, slightly dry tannins. The young 2006 struck me as more graceful.
