Daniel Twardowski is a maverick grower in the Mosel, a region famed for Riesling, who instead planted Burgundian Pinot Noir clones on steep slate slopes, with the stated objective of making top quality Pinot Noir, distinct from the different clones of Spatburgunder. Ardoise, meaning slate in French, reflects this unusual terroir. Made with minimal intervention and gentle extraction, the 2017 shows a bright ruby colour, perfumed aromas of raspberry, rose petal and a distinct mineral, stony edge from the slate soils. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy and fine-tannined, with real freshness. An intriguing, food-friendly curiosity, good with duck or salmon.
