Danbury Ridge Chardonnay 2023 is a still wine produced in Essex, UK. Following careful selection, the grapes were handpicked and whole bunch-pressed, then fermented in 228L Burgundian oak barrels with full solids. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation while resting on gross lees for 12 months, enhancing its complexity. After a single bâtonnage, it was transferred to tank for further maturation before bottling without fining.

The 2023 Chardonnay spent 12 months in 40% new oak. The nose is all lemony, creamy intensity that opens up into the milkiness of fresh cobnuts. The rounded, almost juicy body has real flow and overtones of pineapple, but there is a firm contour of freshness too. Lovely. Anne Krebiehl2nd January 2026

Complex Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Located between Blackwater estuary and the river Crouch in Essex, Danbury Ridge is a leading producer of English wines, producing premium still wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate was founded by Michael and Heather Bunker, and is managed by their daughters, Janine and Sophie.

The first vines were planted at Danbury in 2014, with the area’s unique mesoclimate (this part of Essex is one of the warmest and driest in British Isles) being deemed especially suitable to ripening Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Now equipped with a state-of-the-art cellar managed by winemaker Liam Idzikowski, Danbury Ridge looks set to become one of the driving forces of the English wine revolution for years to come.
