Situated within the Margaux appellation, Château d’Issan is a Third Growth estate with a rich heritage dating back to the 12th century. Its Grand Vin is typically aged for 18 months in French oak barrels – one third of which are new – and the wine is bottled without filtration. The 2005 vintage evokes aromas of dark fruits accompanied by violets, cedar, and exotic spices. The palate offers a luxurious and textured mouthfeel, with silky tannins, remarkable acidity and multi-layered fruits.

Good depth of ruby red colour, and every time I drink this wine it blows me away with how good it is. Extremely controlled, savoury, soy, tobacco, saline crackers, smoked earth, blackberry and loganberry fruit, so much texure, and a tickle of eucaplyptus on the finish. Classy and balanced, with juicy signoff that stretches out through the palate. Bloody great wine, one to celebrate. Has tertiary aromas coming in, but you welcome them for the added complexity that they bring. 42hl/h yield.Jane Anson14th September 2022

The 2005 Château d’Issan is one that Emmanuel Cruse describes as “the first great wine of the modern era”. It has more Merlot than previous vintages as some plots were replanted. It also displays more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2000. Blackberry and briary, wilted rose petals and violets are nicely focused, though you could argue not as complex as more recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a fine bead of acidity and gentle grip. It has a lively finish with a subtle marine influence on the aftertaste. This 2005 is drinking beautifully now and will continue to give pleasure for another 15-20 years. 92/Drink 2021-2032.Neal Martin1st March 2021

Dark crimson. Very energetic, aromatic nose. Full-blown and opulent and very 2005. Lots of tannin, but ripe tannin. Very bright fruit. Good example of the vintage and it also expresses Margaux. Good structure. Hits the palate throughout the tasting experience. (JR)
