Château d`Armailhac 1996 is a Cinquième Cru Classé red Bordeaux from Pauillac. The 1996 vintage is a classic expression of the Médoc, produced during a year that favoured the Cabernet Sauvignon grape on the gravelly soils of Pauillac. This wine has matured gracefully over nearly 30 years, developing the complex tertiary notes of forest floor, tobacco and dried herbs. The structure is firm yet refined, with the tannins now fully integrated into the dark fruit core of the wine. It represents a quintessential Pauillac profile, offering a long, savoury finish dominated by cedar, cassis and a touch of pencil lead.

A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 34% Merlot, the 1996 d’Armailhac is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. It Tumbles out of the glass with expressive scents of kirsch, blackcurrant jelly, crushed rocks, and sandalwood, with wafts of mossy tree bark and tobacco leaf. The medium-bodied palate offers amazingly energetic red and black berry preserve flavors, with a gently chewy texture and great tension, finishing long and lifted. Quite evolved rim. Meaty, developed nose with a hint of meat extract/Oxo. Sweet start and then very chewy austere finish. A rather muted Pauillac. Second bottle even more obviously reduced. (JR)
