D`Armailhac 1989 is a full-bodied, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Formerly known as Mouton d`Armailhac, Château d`Armailhac was designated as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and is part of the broader portfolio of estates under Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Recent improvements in quality have elevated Château d`Armailhac`s status, and it is now considered one of the best-value wines in Pauillac. "Dark shaded rusty/ruby and not as intense a colour as the 1986 tasted alongside it. Sweetly fragrant. Gentle texture with some brûlée notes and a hint of iron filings. Fresher than stereotypical 1990. Attractive, pretty, relatively light wine perhaps just past its peak. But it has taken on sweetness and charm since I last tasted it in 2010." Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin told me that when the 1989 d’Armailhac was tasted en primeur, tasters would have met it under its old name, Mouton Baronne Philippe. Come bottling time, it was rebranded as d’Armailhac. It has a fresh but herbal nose displaying a struck match note that is rather off-putting. The palate is harsh on the entry, light and rather hollow, with bitter tannin and a severely dried out finish. Past its best. 12.9% alcohol. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the château. Dark with some Pauillac structure still in evidence. High-toned, classic Pauillac nose with some dryish tannins still showing. Dry finish –definitely needs food. Bit of a dry old stick on opening. Will it take on flesh and charm in a decanter? Amazingly unfleshy for a 1989! (JR)
