Real de Asúa from the illustrious Rioja producer, CVNE, is a brilliant wine produced from their best vineyards in Villalba and Haro. Deep in colour, it has intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits, exotic spices, ground coffee and subtly toasty oak. Medium-bodied, plush and interwoven by fine-grained tannins, there is early drinking appeal, however, there is ample palate concentration and freshness for this to age particularly well.

Same as with Viña Real's, I hadn't tasted the more modern Tempranillo aged in new French oak from CVNE for a long while, and the wine to be released now is also from 2016, so I tasted the 2016 Real de Asúa. This wine was first produced in 1999 and matured in barrique for 18 months. It has a mixture of modern and traditional Rioja, but here I find more tannins and a little more influence from the aging in barrel. It's obviously young and should improve with a little more time in bottle. 3,000 bottles were filled in January 2018.Luis Gutierrez28th June 2019

CVNE

A Spanish Classic

CVNE is a family-run company, founded in March 1879 in Haro, Rioja by Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. The Real de Asúa brothers’ aim was to capitalise on the flourishing new trade in wine and over 140 years later CVNE is still under the stewardship of the direct descendants of the founding family, now in its fifth generation.

Wines produced under the CVNE label include "Cune" a label inspired by an early mis-spelling of the CVNE name; "Monopole", a superb white Rioja; "Corona", a rare sweet white produced using grapes affected by noble rot; "Real de Asúa", a sister wine to the famous Imperial range; "Vina Real", premium red and white Rioja produced from grapes sourced in the Alavesa sub-region; "Pagos de Viña Real", CVNE's top tier Rioja first released in 2001; and "Contino", a Rioja produced using grapes sourced exclusively from a 62 hectare estate near Laserna.
