The Chave family has reportedly been producing wines in the Rhône Valley since 1481 and is unequivocally one of the most famous producers of Hermitage. Cuvée Cathelin is an ultra-exclusive luxury wine which made its debut with the 1990 vintage. It is named after a close family friend, artist Bernard Cathelin, and is produced mostly from Syrah from the Les Bessards lieu-dit with an extended period of maturation in new French oak. Only made in selected vintages production is strictly limited to around 200 cases. From the superb 1991 vintage, this is magnificently rich, full-bodied and powerful, with extraordinary savoury depth.

I was blown away by Chave’s 1991 Cuvée Cathelin. Still incredibly fresh, this vibrant, opulent wine revealed extraordinary precision and nuance in a full-bodied style. Dark cherries, cassis, earthiness, smoke and graphite all made an appearance in this breathtakingly pure, expressive wine. Antonio Galloni1st August 2007
