Fontaine-Gagnard is a family-run domaine with approximately 12 hectares of vines across 22 appellations in the villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Pommard. The estate was formed in 1985 by Laurence Gagnard and her husband Richard Fontaine after Laurence inherited part of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. This release is from Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, the only grand cru vineyard that lies entirely within the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet. Expect a fragrant, fruity style, with notes of orange peel, apricot and spices.

The 2019 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite floral on the nose, with pressed yellow flowers almost obscuring the slightly tropical fruit. Candied orange peel and touches of apricot emerge with time. The palate is well balanced with a rounded, honeyed texture, low acidity and a heavy dose of oak that dries out the phenolic and overtly spicy finish. It is a decent Criots, though, as I felt just after bottling, the Domaine oversaw better Grand Crus in this vintage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Neal Martin12th December 2023
