The 2016 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet from Caroline Morey represents an intriguing expression of Chardonnay from one of Burgundy`s esteemed Grand Cru vineyards. This wine showcases characteristics typical of its origin, including flavours of citrus, stone fruit and subtle minerality. There are hints of oak evident in the background, offering structure without overpowering the fruit. The palate is defined by a taut acidity, imparting a linear focus that belies the richness associated with the appellation. Caroline Morey founded her domaine in 2014, utilising a small parcel of just 0.14 hectares in Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.

Pale, bright straw-yellow. Musky peach, pear, menthol and smoky minerality on the reduced nose. Densely packed, salty wine with lurking orchard and stone fruit flavors currently overshadowed by a distinctly smoky quality and salty minerality. This too is rather reduced but conveys strong savory, smoky soil tones and a thickness of texture. A bit richer than the above but with a deeper pitch, and less harmonious today. Has plenty of acidity but not quite the lift of the Caillerets. Held up beautifully in the recorked bottle.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2018
