Château Coutet 2001 is a Premier Cru sweet wine from Barsac. The limestone subsoils of the estate contribute lift and definition to the botrytised fruit, which shows aromas of apricot, candied peel and saffron with subtle notes of honey and spice. The palate combines richness with bright acidity, giving a sense of precision that offsets the wine’s natural sweetness. Layers of citrus, dried fruit and beeswax unfold with air, carried by firm structure and mineral freshness typical of Barsac. In half bottle, maturity has advanced more rapidly, yielding complexity and a mellow, harmonious finish.

From one of the few remaining bottles at the estate (unbelievably!), the 2001 Coutet has a generous bouquet with yellow plum, Seville oranges, white peach, chai and orange blossom. The palate is viscous on the entry, more so than the 1996. It's concentrated with good depth and weight. Maybe it could benefit from a little more acidity and nerve on the finish? But this represents a fine Coutet nonetheless, just pipped by the 1996. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. Neal Martin13th February 2024
