Situated in the Barsac region of Bordeaux, Château Coutet is a producer of top-end Sauternes wines. Predominantly composed of Sémillon, with lesser proportions of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, Château Coutet`s vineyards thrive in clay and limestone soils. This terroir imparts a distinctive minerality to the sweet, botrytized wine produced by the estate. The 1989 vintage has aged beautifully, brimming with notes of apricot, butterscotch, spices and burnt sugar.

Vinous
The 1989 Coutet actually surpasses the bottle tasted at the château three years earlier. The nose has orange blossom, mandarin and less honeysuckle; it displays a little more saffron here. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen line of acidity, marmalade and quince, perhaps more viscous than previous bottles, with a convincingly harmonious finish. This is the best bottle that I have encountered. Tasted at the 1989 dinner at Piccolino in London.
