Château Coutet is known for producing Sauternes-style sweet wines with great complexity, elegance, and finesse. The wines typically exhibit a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, with flavours of tropical fruit, citrus, honey, and botrytis notes. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by a warm, dry summer, leading to an early harvest. In Sauternes and Barsac, the conditions were generally favourable for the development of noble rot, which is essential for the production of high-quality sweet wines. Some producers reported that the noble rot developed quite rapidly, leading to concentrated and opulent wines.

The 2020 Coutet has 138 g/l of residual sugar and a pale lemon-straw color. It rolls out with tantalizing scents of lemon butter, salted almonds, and lime blossoms, leading to touches of fresh ginger and chalk dust. The palate is tightly knit, with energetic citrus layers and a minerally finish. Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th April 2023

The 2020 Coutet has a promising nose with dried honey, nectarine, Clementine and saffron scents, though it doesn't quite have the complexity of the best Sauternes. The palate is well balanced with a tangy opening, fine depth and better acidity than others in this flight. Marmalade and quince tones emerge toward the finish as this lingers nicely in the mouth. Very fine. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin12th November 2024
